With Locale and the WiMAX/4G Plug-in, your phone can automatically enable or disable your 4G connection based on conditions.
You can enable 4G whenever you are charging, or in a known location with 4G coverage, and then disable to save battery.
This is a Locale plug-in: it requires "Locale" from the Android Market.
