Apps are sorted alphabetically.
Accordingly you can:
Left: Left half
Right: Right half
Up: Undo
Down: Reset

Slow to load icons, or to quickly search through apps. Try Gesture Search by Google, a lot more intuitive to find apps on your phone.

How does this make finding apps easier? Instead of 4 (or 5 for some of us) by 4 in the tray, this shows one at a time..
