The Shaping Project is all about helping people to change their habits by using known techniques for behavioral modification.
It is well known that the way we act is dependent of the consequences we receive after we have done something.
The strongest impact from a consequence will be if it is NAP;
Near: If the consequence comes directly after you have done something.
Always: If the consequence comes every time.
Positive: If it is positive.
Many people try to stop smoking just by being threatened about all the bad consequences that might happen. Some day. Maybe. But for each cigarette they take, they get a sensation of well being (Positive) every time (Always), and right after (Near).
Putting it in a table we can quickly do the maths; the enforcement for smoking is much stronger than the opposite.
What we have done is giving you a tool that will get the odds in your favour!
Shaping is a term, which means that you change a behavior by taking small but consequent steps toward the desired behavior. Many small steps will be more effective than few large.
We will reward you when you resist. We wont punish you when you fail.
In fact a positive consequence is five to eight times more effective than a negative.
Each time you resist a smoke, you push the symbol for resisting a smoke, and the app will reward you and tell you something good about not smoking.
It will instantly make you fell proud of yourself.
The better you get at resisting you will reach certain levels. You will notice that resisting smoking will be easier. Sure, sometimes you will take a smoke, but we wont punish you for that.
By taking small but consequent steps you will shape your behavior into being a non-smoker!
